Janke, Simonsen make All-U.P. Dream Team

Dollar Bay-Tamarack City senior Ashton Janke was named the All-U.P. Division 4 Player of the Year on Friday.

Janke’s accolade was among a few for local basketball players in this year’s U.P. Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association selections.

Janke and Houghton senior Brad Simonsen were named to the Dream Team.

Dollar Bay was named the Division 4 Team of the Year after finishing the regular season 18-2 and reaching the Division 4 District 98 final against Chassell before the COVID-19 outbreak forced an abrupt close to the season.

Iron Mountain’s Foster Wonders was named Mr. U.P. Basketball and Division 1-3 Player of the Year.

Marquette was named the Division 1-2 Team of the Year. Iron Mountain was selected as the Division 3 Team of the Year.

Houghton junior Pablo Salgado was named to the Division 1-3 Second Team.

Ewen-Trout Creek’s Jaden Borseth was named to the Division 4 First Team.

Dollar Bay’s Davin Hill and Connor LeClaire were Second Team selections.

Chassell’s Bill Rautiola and Ontonagon’s Logan Latvis were Division 4 Honorable Mention.

Iron Mountain’s Foster Wonders and Marcus Johnson, Negaunee’s Jason Waterman and Marquette’s Kam Karp joined Janke and Simonsen on the Dream Team.

The Division 1-3 First Team included Negaunee’s Jakson Sager, West Iron County’s Justin Nelson, Westwood’s Zach Carlson, Escanaba’s Peyton Fedell and Norway’s Kody Hendricks.

Besides Salgado, the Division 1-3 Second Team included Marquette’s Ty Lotterman, Gladstone’s Rane Castor and Cam Ballard, Menominee’s Keagan Monroe, Negaunee’s Drew Lindberg, Gwinn’s James Harnick, Ishpeming’s Jacob Kugler, Norway’s Logan Parolini, Manistique’s Schyler Andersen and Marquette’s Drew Wyble.

Borseth was joined on the Division 4 First Team by Pickford’s Nick Edington, Carney-Nadeau’s Brett LaFord, Brimley’s Zach Gross and North Central’s Luke Gorzinski.

Hill and LeClaire were joined on the Division 4 Second Team by Rapid River’s Tyler Sundling, Wakefield-Marenisco’s Morgan Miskovich, Cedarville’s Trey Paquin, Mid Peninsula’s Zach Englund, Rudyard’s E.J. Suggitt, North Dickinson’s Cameron Schultz, Engadine’s Pedro Pardo and Maplewood Baptist’s Isaiah May.

Negaunee’s Dan Waterman was named the Division 1-3 Coach of the Year. Carney-Nadeau’s Paul Polfus was named Division 4 Coach of the Year.

The girls All-U.P. basketball selections will be announced in Tuesday’s edition of The Daily Mining Gazette.
