Wolverine tops Portage Lake in oldtimers game, 9-0
STANTON — The Wolverine oldtimers baseball team snapped a nine-game losing streak against Portage Lake in a big way in the annual oldtimers game played Sunday.
Steve Stukel gained the win in a 9-0 verdict, allowing just three hits.
“He (Stukel) was the story of the game,” Portage Lake manager Joe Romano said. “We couldn’t do anything with him.”
Portage Lake still leads the overall series by a 33-23 margin, with the two teams to play again on July 24 at the Wolverine field.
Wolverine plated two runs in the second inning on a walk, single by Glenn Patrick and a pair of errors.
The northend squad scored single runs in the 4th and 5th innings and put the game away in the sixth frame on a three-run homer by Rukala.
The latter had two hits in the contest along with Hoot Gibson and Glenn Patrick.
Stukel gave up three walks and struck out five in getting the win. All three PL hits were scattered.
Donnie Hill was the losing chucker, giving up 12 hits, walking four and fanning four batters.
