Escanaba beats Houghton, 84-49

HOUGHTON – A three-level sweep was in store for the Escanaba Eskymos Tuesday night as they defeated the Houghton Gremlins in freshman, junior varsity and varsity action in Houghton.

The varsity team won 84-49 over a youthful Gremlins squad.

“We did a good job of jumping on Houghton pretty good,” Eskymos coach Tracy Hudson said. “They’re young (but) they’re doing a lot of good things.”

With the big lead, Escanaba was able to swap out their players and give everyone a chance to get some time in the game.

“We shot the ball real well and shared. The good thing is we got the guys some good playing time,” Hudson commented. “Some of the guys who have been working hard in practice haven’t got a chance to play. We were happy to give everyone significant playing time.”

Trevor Brown earned a double-double with 14 rebounds and 14 points, while Casey Bray and Connor Smale each had six assists.

Colin Hudson led Escanaba with 20 points while Jared Hanson collected 10.

Mikko Salmi led the Gremlins with 19 points.

“Very proud of the kids following our game plan,” coach Hudson added. “We’ve got tough games ahead so it was a good one for us to grow. I thought we cleaned up a lot of the little things.”

The freshman won 50-35 and the JVs won 62-35. Coach Hudson noted, “It was nice for all three teams to be together and get a win.”

The Eskymos will hit the road next to face Cedarburg, Wis. Friday.
