A huge thank-you to the Keweenaw Area Community Foundation for approving a grant to the Dan Schmitt Gift of Music and Education Fund. Through “Funding Youth Initiatives” we were able to offer free music lessons at the Calumet Art Center for 23 students for the months of November, December, and January. On May 21, a benefit for the UP Honor Flight was held at American Legion Post 90 Lake Linden by The Sons of The American Legion, Post 90, and Post 90 Auxiliary. The benefit raised more than $15,000 to send veterans to Washington DC to see the memorials built in their honor. Dear Editor, The cooperation of a community is less common these days and we still have it! Many entities took part in the success of our 2nd Annual Verna Mize Triathlon recently and they are certainly worthy of recognition. The law enforcement presence in the water, on the trails and streets were comforting to racers and organizers. We had the city Police, Sheriff’s department and Coast Guard all very visible and available in the event we needed them.
