Info on Alberta mill needed

To the Editor: It's been reported locally that Michigan Technological University will be demolishing part or whole of historical Ford buildings/sawmill in Alberta. This could soon take part without a public forum. This property is spoken of in tourism booklets throughout Michigan and beyond. We would appreciate detailed public information from MTU on why this historic landmark would be removed from future enjoyment and education.

America must stay course in Ukraine to prevail

To the Editor: “These are the times that try men’s souls.” Those famous words from Thomas Paine’s “The American Crisis” fit very well to today’s situation in Ukraine. In December 1776, George Washington’s army was in retreat, a cold winter was setting in, and dispirited Patriot volunteers were drifting away to their homes and families. Today in Ukraine, Putin’s forces are probably peaking in their bayonet-at-back motivation, while promised weapons from America have not yet fully arrived on scene. Thus it is with anxious hearts we must endure reports of Russian ...

Ukraine benefit a resounding success in Houghton

To the Editor: I write to express deep gratitude to all who contributed to this weekend’s benefit Concert for Ukraine, especially the marvelous performers: Amanda Matznik, Leslie Dukes, Eleanor McKinney, Dr. Jared Anderson, Austin Malarchick, Adelina Oronovo, Nazar Gora, and Dean and Bette Premo. The audience was magnificent in singing the Ukrainian National Anthem. To raise our voices in joy is but one way to share; significant funds were raised as well, which are on their way to help Ukrainian families displaced by a senseless and brutal invasion. We all must be boots on the ...

End of abortion at hand?

To the Editor: As I write this letter, the U.S. Supreme Court seems poised to do away with its 1973 decision, which facilitated the destruction of tens of millions of innocent lives. This is very welcomed news and a long awaited moment in history! In the national debate regarding the rights of preborn children, it is critical that we turn for direction to the Bible, which is the only true moral compass. “Then the word of the Lord came unto me, saying, Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and ordained thee a ...

Right to choice shouldn’t be taken away

To the Editor: As this is a hot topic I know that I will get heat for my comments. The news is again filled with views on abortion both for and against. I believe in the sanctity of life, and also the right for women to make decisions as to their reproductive rights. This right to their bodies should not be legislated away by politicians (mostly men). The choice of options should be a matter for her, her doctor, and any significant other involved. A women should not be forced to endure an unwanted or medically dangerous pregnancy because men feel that they are just chattel and brood ...
