Public Hearing May 19

To the editor: To all concerned citizens, The Portage Township Planning Commission will hold a public meeting on May 19, 2022 (Thursday) at 7:00 pm to consider amending the Zoning Ordinance to permit seaplane operations as a special use in Portage Townships existing B-2 Zoning District. Airports are only allowed in M-1 manufacturing districts, so essentially they are trying to rezone the area from B-2 to M-1. To the editor: During the 30 years we’ve known him, Craig Waddell has consistently expressed empathy for the concerns and opinions of others. These are the kinds of qualities voters look for in their elected officials. Craig decides on issues only after careful listening and thorough research. To the editor: On May 3 there is a special election in the Village of Calumet, and there is only one question on the ballot. The language on the petition that was circulated read, “Shall ordinance No. 158 which eliminates the election of the village treasurer and provides for appointment of the village treasurer by the council be approved? To the editor: Next month the Portage Township Planning Commission will hold a public hearing to consider a proposed change to the zoning ordinance to allow a seaplane business to operate at the former Onigaming and Pilgrim Point property. This change is not temporary and will permanently alter the beautiful shoreline and the area all around Pilgrim Point as you drive into Houghton on both sides of highway 41.
