Houghton sweeps West PAC track and field title

GWINN — The Shamion sisters combined for five individual victories here Wednesday, helping the West Iron County girls place third in the West PAC Conference track meet here Wednesday.

Houghton edged Negaunee 96-90 for the title and the Wykons scored 75 points.

“This was a very competitive meet,” said Negaunee coach Vickie Paupore. “None of the teams scored more than 100 points. Houghton has a very good team and the field events helped us out again today.”

The Houghton boys also won with 138 points, followed by Negaunee 99 and Ishpeming 76.

Freshman Danika Shamion, ranked second in the Upper Peninsula according to athletic.net, took the 100-meter dash in 13.24 seconds, 200 (27.41) and 400 (1:03.52) and helped the Wykons win the 1600 relay on this mostly sunny, but windy and chilly day.

“My blocks have a little rust on them, so I have to try to catch up,” she said. “When I see I’m a little behind the girls alongside me, I tell myself I can win. The wind in the back stretch kind of held us back. But when we get the wind on our back, it kind of evened things out. It pushed us.”

Senior Jordan Shamion, who plans to run at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point next season, also helped the 1600 relay and captured the 100-meter hurdles in 16.97 seconds and 300s (48.8), both personal-bests on this mostly sunny, but windy and chilly day.

“You always have to start fast and keep that pace,” she said. “I need to work on getting a little closer to the hurdles and getting my steps down. This is the first time I broke 17 seconds in the 100s.”

Houghton won the 400 and 3200 relays and Lillian Williston added victories in shot put at 35 feet, one inch and discus (99-2).

Negaunee junior Alyssa Hill, who set a school record in discus (122-7) in this year’s WIN meet, was runner-up in shot put (34-2) and disc (95-4) this time.

“I received a lot of support from my coaches and teammates, and it was exciting to get the record that day,” she said. “Then, I tested positive for Covid and was under quarantine for 1 1/2 weeks. It feels good to be back.”

Ishpeming freshman Lola Korpi prevailed in three tight races, taking the 800 (2:30.34), 1600 in a personal-best 5:33.01 and 3200 (12:12.52).

Houghton sophomore Ingrid Seagren took second in the 1600 (5:35.21) and 3200 (12:12.98) and Westwood’s Elizabeth Williams, who took the lead in the second lap, was runner-up in the 800 (2:30.59).

“I felt I had a lot left in the tank in the 800,” said Korpi. “Ingrid and Elizabeth are amazing runners. I’m glad to have those girls out there to push me. That made for a good test before the U.P. Finals, and I think this is a good confidence builder going into the Finals.”

Westwood’s Avery Mariuzza copped pole vault (7-6).

Iron Mountain swept the sprint relays and Chloe Maycroft won long jump (14-8).

“The cold weather hits us a little harder than we expected and several kids got injured,” said Iron Mountain coach Karen Ellis. “I’m happy the girls’ 400 and 800 relays won and our field events went well overall. There was great competition here.”

Maari Brey provided Hancock with its lone first in high jump (4-10), an inch higher than Maycroft.

The Houghton boys, who won the 1600 and 3200 relays, got individual victories from Cade Holombo in the 200 (24.01), Donovan Dueweke in the 400 (53.66) and Eric Weiss in the 3200 (10:37.56) in a race which 1.22 seconds separated the top three finishers.

“Our distances kind of carried us this year,” said Houghton co-coach Erik Johnson, who shares those duties with Dan Juntilla. “We placed 1-2 in the 200 which was big for us. Donovan gave us a big win in the 400 and anchored the 1600 relay. Eric anchored the 3200 relay and his win in 3200 was huge. We as Houghton co-coaches made our distance coach Bill Bulleit our conference Coach of the Year. Bill has done a tremendous job for us.”

Negaunee grabbed the top four places in shot put, won by Isiah Wood at 38-11, and Bryce Dunstan added a first in discus (105-3).

Ishpeming’s David Liimatta was a double-winner, taking the 800 (2:13.07) and 1600 (4:46.81).

Iron Mountain took the 800 relay and Joey Colavecchi provided the Mountaineers with a win in high jump (5-10).

Westwood’s Jack Boase won the 110 hurdles (16.08) and 200 (43.86). Lenny Pizziola took pole vault (10-6) and the Patriots captured the 400 relay.

Calumet’s Dryden Nelson won long jump (20-6) and the 100 (11.35).

The teams conclude their season in the U.P. Finals on June 5 at Kingsford.
