Nelson runs for 296 yards, 3 TDs as Copper Kings beat Miners for district title

NEGAUNEE — Dryden Nelson ran for 296 yards and three touchdowns to lead Calumet in a 24-19 win in the MHSAA Division 6 district championship on Friday.

Two of Nelson’s scores were long runs of 65 and 80 yards, respectively. His rushing total alone was more than Negaunee’s 263 total offensive yards.

Calumet led 10-6 at halftime.

The Copper Kings (9-2) visit Standish-Sterling (9-2) in a Division 6 regional final at 1 p.m. Saturday. Standish-Sterling beat Boyne City 34-14 in the district championship.

Calumet had 354 offensive yards, all on the ground. Kip Kangas ran five times for 38 yards.

Brady Roose led Negaunee with 60 rushing yards on 12 carries and a touchdown that gave the Miners a brief lead. Nelson’s 80-yard run came 12 seconds later, and the Copper Kings never looked back.
