STANTON TOWNSHIP — It was a good week for Craig Heinonen Coldwell Banker baseball in the Copper County Twilight League.

A 7-1 win over Houghton Building Supply-Stanton on Thursday continued a two-game winning streak that began on Tuesday with a 4-3 win over REL Inc.-Mohawk Technology.

Thursday’s winning formula in Stanton was the same one used earlier in the week, said Coldwell Banker player-manager Ross Kinnunen.

“We played cleaned baseball this week,” he said. “When we have no errors, we have a good chance of winning.”

While the two rivals tallied runs in the first frame, the tie was short lived. Coldwell Banker (4-3) countered with a run in the second, another one in the fourth and a big four-run fifth inning.

In the second Owen Kariniemi of Coldwell Banker got on base and eventually made it home to make it a 2-1 Coldwell tilt after two.

In the fourth back-to-back base knocks by Carl Kangas and Andrew Kinnunen allow Kangas to score and give Coldwell a 3-1 lead.

Then came the fifth where Coldwell Banker closed the door on HBS-Stanton.

Starting pitcher Carson Turner helped his own cause by blasting a triple to deep center that turned in a four-bagger due to a HBS-Stanton overthrow. Trevor Halonen then stroked a single and third baseman Malcolm Purdy joined him on the bases after being hit by a pitch. With nobody out, Owen Kariniemi then stepped up to the plate and promptly launched a 1-2 fastball from HBS-Stanton’s starter Yadi Sevilla over the left-center fence to make it a 7-1 game.

“Owen said he was due for a long ball as he hadn’t hit one in a while,” said Kinnunen. “He certainly got all of that one.”

He added that Carson Turner pitched a gem as he threw a complete-game win with 15 strikeouts on the night. This including striking out the HBS-Stanton (1-4) squad twice for three outs – first in the second frame and again in the sixth.

HBS-Stanton player-manager Daron Durocher said that despite the loss, he isn’t worried.

“We are missing a few guys here and there, but that is no excuse,” he said. “You win some, you lose some. We just aren’t clicking on all cylinders. However, we’ll come around.”
