Marcotte shines, but Lakes fall in regional final to Trojans

Jason Juno/The Globe (Ironwood) Lake Linden-Hubbell’s Danny Marcotte shoots during Thursday night’s MHSAA Division 4 regional final at Lakeview Gym in Negaunee. He led all scorers with 27 points.

NEGAUNEE — Crystal Falls Forest Park didn’t start well in a late February loss to Lake Linden-Hubbell, so they made it an emphasis to come out of the gates differently in Thursday night’s MHSAA Division 4 regional final against the Lakes.

Mission accomplished.

The Trojans jumped out to a 21-9 lead and held off Lake Linden-Hubbell’s second-half surge to win 66-52 for their first regional title since 2007. Forest Park (22-4) will face St. Ignace (20-6) in Tuesday’s quarterfinal at Gladstone, where the Trojans will look to get to state for the first time since 2004.

“It’s pretty special,” Forest Park coach Jason Price said. “Winning in the tournament is just special. When you get to quarterfinals and you’re the last eight teams to be playing in Division 4, it’s really special. It’s exciting for the kids, it’s exciting for the school, it’s exciting for the town.”

The Trojans were led by the Giuliani brothers, junior Kevin Giuliani ignited the Forest Park start and freshman Vic Giuliani led them in scoring with 24 points.

Danny Marcotte led Lake Linden-Hubbell with 27 points as they finished the season at 22-4.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better season,” Lakes coach Brett Poissant said. “Obviously you want to win this game and you never want to lose, but ending the season how we did and going on the run, I’m proud of the kids.”

Forest Park’s start was just too tough to overcome.

Kevin Giuliani, the 6-5, 245-pound Mitchell Snyder Lineman of the Year in the U.P. last football season, scored nine points and the Trojans built a 13-4 lead less than five minutes into the ballgame at Negaunee’s Lakeview Gym.

Marcotte had all seven of the Lakes’ points when it was 15-7. But Giuliani continued to dominate before the quarter ended and the Trojans had a commanding 21-9 lead already.

The Trojans built the lead as high as 21 in the second quarter and led 37-22 at the half.

Matching the Lakes’ intensity was Forest Park’s focus for the first half.

“We were getting 50-50 balls and we were hurting them bad on the offensive rebounds to start,” Price said. “The energy kept building and building and we didn’t let up until the end.”

The Lakes were playing from behind all night.

“We started slow,” Poissant said. “After the last two games, I anticipated it. I just didn’t want to start as slow as we did. But we battled back and that shows what kind of seniors we have and what kind of leadership we have.”

Lake Linden-Hubbell is a team of mostly seniors, 10 in all, and they did battle back. They cut it to five, 39-34, with a 12-2 run to start the third quarter.

“That’s pretty impressive in itself, especially with how well Crystal Falls was playing,” Poissant said.

Marcotte was up to 18 points by then.

“Marcotte stepped up,” Poissant said. “He’s been cold the last two games. It was nice to see him end his career the way he should, hitting shots and doing his thing.”

Gavin Rintala hit a couple of 3s to help right the ship for Forest Park. They led 45-36 after his second triple and ended the quarter up 54-38.

“Gavin hit a couple big 3s, that’s just killer when you’re trying to come back,” Price said.

Forest Park maintained a double-digit lead throughout the final period. They capped it with a highlight-reel dunk by Vic Giuliani (6-1) in the final minute.

“That was pretty neat,” Price said. “He’s only a freshman, but he plays like a senior. Playing above the rim is just an asset at any level, especially at the Division 4 level. If you’re up above the rim, it’s tough to guard.”

The Giuliani brothers combined for 43 of the Trojans’ 66 points.

“They put on a show tonight,” Price said.

“I think the combination of the two is absolute mayhem for a coach to have to deal with,” Poissant said. “They play two completely different games and that’s what complements each other. One’s outside driving in (Vic) and the other one’s in the low block doing his thing (Kevin), great footwork by him. They’re just good, they’re good, smart basketball players.”
