Puppet making class for adults with Trish Helsel
HANCOCK — In Puppet Making Class with Trish Helsel at the Copper Country Community Arts Center, students will construct a rod puppet with movable arms and sculpted head. Students will learn how to sculpt puppet heads using Monster Clay, create a plaster cast, and cast a final puppet head using a wood filler material. The heads will be attached to a wood body frame over which students will create a costume. This is an adult class for students ages 18 years or older.
Instructor Trish Helsel spent a semester sabbatical with the Center for Puppetry Arts, in Atlanta, Georgia, where her passion for puppetry grew to inspire a new initiative at Michigan Technological University in the form of The Puppet Project. She received a Research Excellence Fund grant from MTU to create a puppet stage and pursue research in puppet construction and manipulation which resulted in the offering of a new course in the Visual and Performing Arts Department. She also conducted summer puppet workshops for all ages in partnership with Copper Country Community Arts Center.
This eight-week class takes place on Tuesdays, Mar. 17, 24, 31, April 7, 14, 21, 28,and May 5 from 4:30-6pm at the Copper Country Community Arts Center located at 126 Quincy Street in Hancock.
