Facts matter

To the editor: If you arrive at a place where violence is happening, prepared for violence, engage with that violence, there is no legal claim of self-defense as you are, in fact, a willing combatant. If you do this without being sanctioned by the government, outside a combat zone, you are, in fact, a terrorist. Another word for armed civilians operating outside the military is insurgent. This punk Kyle Rittenhouse is guilty as sin and any argument to the contrary is opinion and not fact.

On vaccines

To the editor: Today many Fundamentalist and Evangelical Christians refuse to get vaccinated or wear a mask, ignoring the Biblical mandate to obey the authorities. Hebrews 13:17: “Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, ... “ Romans 13:1-2: “Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.” The police are to serve ...

Making no sense is nonsense

To the editor: To make some sense of this unfathomably complex world, our perceptual systems evolved to rapidly clump together similar sensory input into categories. This automatic, gut-level process confers some momentary survival advantage. It also gives rise to countless false associations which are the root of many superstitions and primitive and, most frequently, incorrect guesses. People evolved to survive in a world that is fraught with danger. Quick guesses may help at first, but some folks never seem to get around to sorting out the actual nature of those previous threats ...

Copper Island Academy

The Friends of Copper Island Academy held a benefit dinner at the school facility on Sept. 18. Our event was supported by several businesses and individuals in the local community. Without their generosity we never would have been successful in raising funds to support the success of our students. We first have a thank you to Connie’s Kitchen for the catering of delicious food and being such easy people to work with to feed everyone who attended. To the editor: Did you see Thursday’s paper (10/21)?  The front page of the sports section had ALL the pictures featuring girls and women’s volleyball! Three of the 4 articles reported on volleyball.  This may mean nothing to anyone, however, there was a time we did not even have girls high school volleyball in this area.  Many of these young ladies play a sport that’s always been available to them, unaware of the humble beginnings of it. Athletic Director Wayne Sickler, always a big supporter of opportunities for girls, made the decision to add volleyball at Calumet High ...

Dinner thanks

To the editor: The Quincy, Franklin, Hancock Township Fire department would like to thank all who patronized our Spaghetti Dinner, as well as our sponsors: McGann Building Supply, Vollwerth & Co., and Campioni Markets for their continued support. We also would like to acknowledge the public service messages provided by the “WOLF” and “WMPL” radio stations, and Dave’s BP. The 50/50 winner was Corbin Eddy. The event was successful and the proceeds will help fund our equipment updates when responding to the needs of our area!
